WellMax were appointed to provide scaffolding to facilitate the redevelopment of this Grade-II listed building in Whitehall from demolition and enabling phase right through to the new build works a complete scaffolding package. The 6-storey structure, which was the former HQ of the Metropolitan Police in the 19th Century and more recently the Ministry of Defence library, is being redeveloped into a luxury 233-bedroom hotel.
The building’s sensitive location – it is bounded by the Police Armed Response Unit HQ, the Department for International Trade and various other Government buildings – meant the project was subject to some high-security issues.
Our designs were carefully scrutinised by the Client’s surveyor and modified during the lead-in phase with particular reference taken of party-wall issues.
We erected scaffolding to all elevations and provided access for the roof and the internal structure removal. We also assisted with the façade retention to maintain three of the listed building façades in Great Scotland Yard.
Another feature of this project was our design and installation of a high-level bridge-structure to enable the contractor to access roof trusses in the building’s atrium during structural demolition.
Following demolition, we provided scaffolding to enable the construction of two new storeys, one of which was in a mansard roof and the excavation of a 3-storey basement using a hanging scaffold method to provide easily adjustable access as the excavation advanced.
