Having demonstrated its success on the first phase of the Oriana, WellMax was contacted to provide full scaffold support for the construction of predominantly retail units and several residential units covering approximately 75,000 square feet. Situated in London’s West End, this was a complex project, creating high-end residential apartments on the top floors above retail space below, which included Primark’s flagship store.
WellMax initially provided overhead protection and loading area to Oxford Street with a heavy duty pavement gantry, this facilitated the erection of an independent façade scaffold on Oxford Street. It’s location in London’s busiest retail streets in terms of traffic and pedestrians – provided several challenges to overcome, including Christmas and New Year sales with the inevitable increased footfall, the installation of the Oxford Street Christmas Decorations, which were fixed to the façade steels with the aid of our scaffold and various carnivals and parades. With detailed planning and interaction with the City of Westminster and Galliard, WellMax achieved the required end result.
We erected scaffolding to all elevations of the seven, six-storey buildings for the cut and carve demolition. We worked closely with the demolition contractor, providing adaptions and erecting advance sections of scaffolding to allow the location of a tower crane during the enabling phase. We also assisted with the installation of the façade retention schemes to enable the grade-II listed Oxford Street elevations to be retained for the new development.
Some of the scaffolding works had to be undertaken out-of-hours to prevent as much disruption as possible. During the busiest phases on the project, there were over 20 WellMax operatives were on-site.
